  • Cut Back Shrubs

Cut back shrubs refer to plants that can benefit from being pruned right to the ground each season, a practice known as Coppicing. This is a great technique for certain shrubs that are grown primarily for their foliage. The result is a whole new flush of vigorous growth from the ground that is lush and thick with better foliage color. This group of plants includes Barberry, Ninebark, Spirea, and Weigela. This pruning should be done when the plant is dormant in the late fall or early spring before the new growth emerges. Read More

Click to Read MoreFor many people in this area, the White-tailed deer has been causing damage to ornamental shrubs and flowers by feeding on them. The severity of damage to ornamental shrubs and flowers is dependent upon your locality, the concentration of deer in the area and the availability of natural food. In one area, deer may eat almost anything if they are really stressed for food. In other areas they may eat only the most favored plants. A n example of this is rhododendron. In some areas deer will feed heavily on Yews (Taxus) and Euonymus and ignore the Rhododendron. At other sites the rhododendrons may be eaten back quite heavily. Deer populations change; an area that was not damaged one year may be damaged in subsequent years. If you had damage one year, it is a good bet the deer will be back in the following years, though they many not come around at all. Deer damage to most trees and shrubs is done during the winter months.

We carry DEER FENCING, which is very effective. You can purchase this by the foot or by the roll and we also offer installation of this product. Repellants such as DEER SCRAM, PLANTSKYD AND LIQUID FENCE have proven to be very effective, used alone or in combination with each other depending on your particular situation. During the spring and summer growing season deer are more likely to feed on perennials, annual and vegetables. Repellent sprays and resistant varieties are the best way to combat the problem.
