  • Cut Back Shrubs

Cut back shrubs refer to plants that can benefit from being pruned right to the ground each season, a practice known as Coppicing. This is a great technique for certain shrubs that are grown primarily for their foliage. The result is a whole new flush of vigorous growth from the ground that is lush and thick with better foliage color. This group of plants includes Barberry, Ninebark, Spirea, and Weigela. Perennial Gardens Print E-mail

Todays Perennial Garden Design has evolved to include ornamental grasses, hardy shrub roses, colorful flowering shrubs, vines and even unique dwarf conifers.

Whether it’s a traditional ‘English Garden’ look or another themed garden (oriental, cutting, scented, herb, monochromatic) or a personalized unique garden space, Hillside Garden Center can help you with plants, design and installation.

Perennial Gardens can be large high maintenance beds to small colorful low maintenance areas. Consider how much work you want to do (or pay for) before designing and installing.

Plant selection is the biggest factor in the amount of maintenance and long term color desired. Choosing pest resistant plants, and plants that have long bloom periods that require little deadheading or staking will reduce maintenance drastically. Longevity is another factor : consider a peony, daylily or hosta that may last generations versus a columbine, dianthus or foxglove that are very short lived, reseed and wander in your garden.

Along with your personal lifestyle, all these factors are considered when we make a design just for you!
