  • Cut Back Shrubs

    Cut back shrubs refer to plants that can benefit from being pruned right to the ground each season, a practice known as Coppicing. This is a great technique for certain shrubs that are grown primarily for their foliage. The result is a whole new flush of vigorous growth from the ground that is lush and thick with better foliage color. This group of plants includes Barberry, Ninebark, Spirea, and Weigela. James Hoteling, CNPL - Hillside Garden CenterJim is a SUNY Cobleskill graduate. He is very active with the NYS Nursery and Landscape Association and specializes in growing and breeding Hosta. He is in charge of the Landscape Contracting Division.

Marywren Thomas CNLP - Hillside Garden CenterMary started working at Hillside in 1984 while attending SUNY Cobleskill, where she earned an AAS degree in Floriculture. She is an avid gardener and collects many types of plants and experiments with all types of gardening projects.  As our Nursery and Garden Shop Manager, she is in charge of our sales yard, plant and product selections and customer service.

Elizabeth Kaczynski - Hillside Garden CenterLiz started working at Hillside in 2005. She  earned a BA degree in Landscape Architecture from SUNY Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. She has also studied abroad in Holland with research related to the Dutch flower market. She has a passion for both gardening and many forms of artistic creations. As a landscape designer she meets with customers at their home to create all aspects of personal outdoor living spaces.
